Andrés Altamirano is an Ecuadorian-born visual artist and documentary photographer based in New York. His interest in photography and textiles is rooted in the work of his Ecuadorian grandmother, who practiced traditional Andean weaving. By incorporating these traditions into his artistic practice, Altamirano explores the complex relationships between migration, cultural identity, and language within transitional spaces. In 2022, he co-founded Runamaky Projects, a community-based archive dedicated to Ecuadorian cultural heritage that seeks to preserve and reactivate traditional Andean-Ecuadorian textile practices. In 2024, he completed the New York Foundation for the Arts Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program. He is a graduate of the Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism Program at the International Center of Photography in New York, where he received the Jan Mulder Fellowship.
